The Harms of Harsh Chemical Disinfectants
As images from the front lines of the pandemic beam into our homes, keeping our living areas safe and clean has taken on new urgency. Those of us who once opted for baking soda and vinegar over chemical cleansers, now find ourselves reaching for harsh chemicals like bleach in an effort to keep our family safe. Many of the ingredients in disinfectants could have unintended side effects on the people you’re trying to protect. Quaternary ammonium chloride (or QUATS) are compounds found in household cleaning products like disinfecting sprays, disinfecting wipes and toilet cleaners. They are powerful irritants registered as pesticides with the EPA and are known to trigger asthma in people who suffer from the illness. Triclosan is an antimicrobial chemical present in some disinfectants. It has been associated with a decrease in thyroid hormones. Other chemicals carry the possibility of creating superbugs due to increased bacterial resistance.

What’s the difference between cleaning, sanitizing and disinfecting?
Some people think that they are all the same, but they're actually different.

Removes dust, debris and dirt from a surface or objects. When you clean, you will likely use soap and water, or a surface spray to physically clean off the surfaces and objects. This may not necessarily kill the germs. But since you removed some of them, there are fewer germs that could spread infection to you.

Refers to lowering the number of germs on a surface to a safe level, as judged by public health standards or requirements. This process works either through cleaning which physically removes germs from surfaces, or disinfecting which kills germs. Sanitizing is generally a little more gentle than disinfecting and only destroys or eliminates all forms of microbial life.

Uses chemicals, or disinfectants, to kill germs on surfaces and objects. It destroys or inactivates both the bacteria and viruses like influenza and rhinovirus on hard, nonporous surfaces. You usually need to leave the disinfectant on the surfaces and objects for a certain period of time to kill the kill pathogenic microorganisms. Disinfecting does not necessarily clean dirty surfaces.
Disinfecting hard, non-porous surfaces is one of the most reliable ways to help lower the risk of spreading germs from surfaces by touch. You should disinfect, not sanitize, because disinfectants are the only products approved by the EPA to kill viruses on hard surfaces.
At EPA, products used to kill viruses and bacteria on surfaces are registered as antimicrobial pesticides. Sanitizers and disinfectants are two types of antimicrobial pesticides. Surface disinfectant products are subject to more rigorous EPA testing requirements and must clear a higher bar for effectiveness than surface sanitizing products. There are no sanitizer-only products with approved virus claims. For this reason, sanitizers do not qualify for inclusion on EPA’s List N: Disinfectants for Use Against SARS-CoV-2 (COVID-19).


To prevent the spread of infection, you should regularly clean and disinfect surfaces and objects that are touched often. For example, in your house, this would include countertops, doorknobs, faucet and toilet handles, light switches, remotes, and toys.
